Blue whale
CollectA, old version ----- This old CollectA/Procon model suffers from a lot of inaccuracies that most blue whale figures seem to suffer from. Wrong head shape, inflated throat (while not in feeding pose), long and thin tailstock and a white underside. Adding to that, this blue whale seems to have the dorsal fin of a humpback. Length 22,5 cm
CollectA, new version ----- This figure released in 2018 is a small improvement over the older CollectA model. The head shape is better but it still has most of the same problems.
RAM Studios ----- This mysterious figure appears to be based on a lifesize model of a Blue whale once on display at the Smithsonian museum. The seller I got it from informed me it was originally purchased from a museum shop in the 60's, which makes it one of the oldest whale figures out there, and one of the rarest as I have not seen any other ones. Length 19,5 cm
Invicta ----- Another vintage model is the famous Invicta blue whale. This was part of a dinosaur museum line and was the only modern animal in that series. Strangely it is also one of the smallest models in that series. It's a pretty good figure for its age. There is a rarer painted version too, which I personally wouldn't bother hunting down. Length 19 cm
Papo ----- This enormous figure by Papo is one of the best blue whale figures out there and, after the Kaiyodo Mega Sofubi, the biggest too. Finally a major toy company comes with a blue whale that has a (mostly) accurate head sculpt, flat throat and short and deep tailstock. Sadly, the paint job lets it down. Like many blue whale models, the throat and belly are white, while this area is about the same colour as the rest of the body on a real blue whale. The mouth, which is articulated, has light grey baleen and a pink tongue, while they should be a very dark blue. There is also no mottling on the body. If you have a bit of skill painting you can probably do this figure's awesome sculpt justice. Length 40 cm
Larami ----- The Larami blue whale is, fittingly, the largest figure of their Whales line. Reaching almost 37 cm it is an impressive size indeed. Of course, accuracy is not as impressive. But, it just has a likeability to me that all Larami's have. Length 36,5 cm
Recur ----- Another sizeable blue whale figure is this one by Recur. Like other models by this company, it's made of a relatively soft plastic filled with cotton. Not something that serious collectors prefer, but their models are sturdy and display well. As for this blue whale, it looks a lot like so many other models of this species. Length 36,5 cm
Schleich 2013 version ----- The second blue whale made by Schleich, not necessarily an improvement over the old one. Made of a rubbery material like many of Schleich's sea creatures. Don't have much else to say about it. Length 27,5 cm
Schleich 2018 version ----- This figure has puzzled me since I first saw the release images. Not because it looks weird per say, but because it is almost identical to the previous blue whale figure they retired the same year. Once again not necessarily an improvement, the rostrum is a more accurate shape but the throat is even more inflated and the fins are an odd shape. Other than that, yeah, it's pretty much the same. Length 27 cm
AAA old version ----- This figure was also sold by Schleich and Bullyland as part of their 'Fremdserie', like the other cetaceans in this line. They have been out of production for a while but are not hard to find. They are not really known for their accuracy... Length 24 cm
Kinto Favourite ----- The blue whale by this Japanese company is one of the best blue whale models made so far. It has a nice U-shaped rostrum and the colours are pretty good including the baleen. It does suffer from a thin tailstock however, and while not an anatomy issue the pose of the pectoral fins make the figure list to one side so displaying this figure standing on rods or hanging looks better than just putting it on the shelf. Length 25,5 cm
Safari ltd ----- I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but this blue whale has many of those same issues most blue whale figures do. The body and tailstock are better than most however. There is a different version of this sculpt which is a lighter turquoise colour with mottling. Length 25 cm
Maia & Borges ----- A cute little blue whale that is a totally different scale from most other M&B cetaceans. It looks a bit sad about it but don't worry little blue whale, I like you still, especially your paintjob. Length 15 cm
Toy Major ----- Toy Major released a few different sets of whales and dolphins over the years but as far as I'm aware, this 2010 model is their only blue whale (not including a weird hollow thing with a gaping mouth). They tried I suppose. I have to say the muscle detail is a nice touch. Length 17 cm
Nayab/Happy Kin ----- This little fella looks a bit creepy, but he actually has some nice features. A U-shaped rostrum and dark coloured baleen for example, and no white belly and throat. Length 15,5 cm
Colorata ----- This blue whale is part of the older Colorata Marine Mammals box, which included a variety of marine mammals (the Deluxe box only has cetaceans). It is the largest figure of the set, but still quite small. As expected from a Japanese company it's a pretty accurate and detailed figure. Length 13,5 cm
Colorata Marine Mammals Deluxe ----- This figure is a bit bigger than the older blue whale by Colorata. Like the humpback from this set, this one comes with 2 throat pieces; one with closed and one with open mouth. A lovely model which has some small flaws, but is mostly accurate for the species. Length 17,5 cm
Missing: AAA open mouth, Nayab closed mouth, Schleich 14552
